The view from my hotel window

image

This is the view from my window in the Hotel Saptaguri in Delhi.  Yes, the window is that dirty, but the street is quite noisy with activity as people on foot, on bikes, and in cars go honking by. It’s about 6:30am and time for me to get in the shower and get ready for the day.  We go back to the airport at 9am for our final flight at 11am for Bagdogra and then on to to Siliguri by car (bus?) .  After 3 doses of antibiotics and lots of Mucinex I am feeling a lot better and should be completely better in a couple of days. Thanks for all the prayers!

Delhi

We landed at Indira Ghandi Airport just about 24 hours after we left Orange, CA. We’re all checked in to our rooms after a pretty short drive (in 3 taxis) to our hotel. Now to take a hot shower (surely Gary will leave me some) and get a few hours of sleep before we go back to the airport to take the final leg of our flying to our destination.

Thanks for the prayers! Everyone and all our luggage are at the hotel…

We’re in Amsterdam!

Well, that was the longest flight I have ever been on.  But a big thank you to Kristie Koontz for the support socks and to Pastor Bob for the antibiotics -both made the flight much more pleasant.  Now we are sitting in the Amsterdam Airport wanting for our flight to Delhi.  Time to head back to the gate!

LOOONNNGGGG flight…

You know those cool maps that show the whole world and where the sun is and isn’t shinning? We flew at the top of the day/night boundary the whole way. The sun was setting for most of our flight.

We’re about to land in Amsterdam (“it’s about time!” says my rear end…)

KK, we’re at our gate, waiting for flight to Delhi..

This is an interesting airport experience. Walked done steps from the plan into a bus (but if stairs are good enough for the President…) Can’t find any power to recharge from… Bob and I have been through the body scanners, but the rest are behind us and it looks like security is on a union break or something… They’re calling for Jarrod and Andrew to come to the desk, but they are still on the other side of security screening and there’s no way Bob and I can get through the sea of humanity between us and th desk… God will work it out!

Send off…LAX

Thank you SO MUCH for the great prayer send off at 10:00 this morning.

We are at LAX, have eaten lunch and are waiting to board our plane…

Countdown switched from days to hours…

…less than a day till we head to LAX and then spend 2 days in airplanes and airports, as we make our way to Siliguri!

Please pray that we have an eventful trip – that we see God work mightily – not only in the lives of the Adivasi, but in our hearts as well.

less than 3 days…

It looks like its cooling down a bit. I’m hoping the weather holds…

We leave for India in less than 3 days time (if our flight is on time…)

Please pray for us as we wrap up our preparation (out last training/prayer meetings as a team is tonight). Please also continue to pray for us as we pack (for not forgetting anything important and/or not taking anything that would get in the way.)

Thank you for praying earlier for my head cold. While I’m (Doug) still a little congested, the head cold didn’t develop into nearly as bad of a cold as my summer ones usually end up being – truly an act of medical mercy by God, prompted by your faithful prayer!

If anyone has any questions they’d like us to try and answer – or if you’d like to send encouragement our way. Making comments here on the blog will go a long way in that direction. A few of us are taking our mobile devices and we should be able to check the blog from time to time over the days of our trip. We’d love to read your notes of encouragement and prayer along the way…

Trip Preparation is Progressing Well

We seem to be well on our way to being prepared to leave as scheduled on June 28 on the latest TACC outreach to the Adivasi people of Northeast India. That’s good because the tickets are purchased, Visas finally approved and in hand, hotel reservations made, and village visits scheduled. The next steps are for us all to prepare for our areas of responsibility while in India and for us to pack.

My area of responsibility will be to work with Gary to attract and teach the children. He will do most of the attracting with his magic tricks and then I will attempt to dazzle them with truths about the one true God through storytelling. I am preparing four stories mainly for the children, but also for the adults, particularly women, who will hang around as we talk to their kids. Since we will be talking to people who currently worship many god’s (animals, objects and nature), I will be ready with the real account of creation. Also, I will be prepared with a presentation of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.

The other two stories will be “A boy shares his lunch” (the feeding of the 5000) and “Jesus calms the storm” to demonstrate the sovereignty and power of the one true God whom we serve. The telling of these stories will be complete with Swedish fish candies, wheat thin crackers and squirt bottles (you can probably figure out where these things figure into the storytelling). Thanks to Mary Beth for imparting her vast wisdom and helping me think this through and get my stories and plans together.

Just like Doug, my other reason for writing this trip update is to make sure that I can do it correctly completely using my tablet to do it. So far so good, but I haven’t posted yet. Please let me know if you discover any problems I may need to fix before we go.

Don’t forget to be praying for us – now while we are preparing as well as while we are gone. God’s word makes it clear that suffering and difficulties are always a part of serving the Lord and Satan will do his best to assure that, so please be a part of our team of prayer warriors!

Test…of capabilities for the blog…

I’m trying to see how much I can do with updating/editing the blog from my iPad. If this works, there’ll be a .PDF file of the gospel in a cube presentation I’m working on (trying to hone as much as I can without losing anything critical to the message…) If it shows up, please take a look and give me any suggestions, comments, questions, etc. – I appreciate the help as I prepare for the trip (less than 2 weeks away now!!!)

The Gospel in a cube

Prayer request…

I’m developing either a head cold or sinus infection (neither of which will be much fun to fly to India with). I have an appointment to see the doctor this afternoon. Please pray that this run its course quickly…or that God heal me before the trip…

…while you’re in the praying mood, please go to the prayer request pages and see how you can be praying for the India team (as a group and as individuals).

Thanks!

– Doug
